Worrell and Fizer Sweep SSC Defensive Player of the Week Awards

Melbourne, Fla. – The accolades continue to mount for both Lynn University basketball programs in the 2018-19 campaign as Kelsi Fizer and Rasheed Worrell were named the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Women's and Men's Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced on Monday.

Fizer repeats as Defensive Player of the Week following her performance in a conference win over Eckerd College. The Douglasville, Ga., product had a game-high 11 rebounds, including eight on the defensive end, adding two steals in Lynn's 61-59 road victory. Fizer and the Fighting Knights held the Tritons to a season-low 31.4 percent shooting from the field, moving to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in league play. The win was the first road victory for Lynn head coach Julia Huddleston at her alma mater.

The sophomore forward earns her second-straight selection as Defensive Player of the Week, previously earning this honor on Dec. 20, 2018. Fizer is the second Fighting Knight woman to garner SSC weekly accolades, following Sydney Fields Defensive Player of the Week selection on Nov. 19. This marks the first time since 2012-13 that the women's basketball program has had two different players of the week recipients and three total selections in the same season.

Worrell's defensive effort helped Lynn post a 71-62 victory on the road at Eckerd College this past Saturday. The Belhaven, N.C., product controlled the boards with a team-high eight rebounds (four defensive), while adding two assists, two steals and two blocks to his team's stat sheet. The Fighting Knights are 10-0 to start the year for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

This is the first career selection for Worrell and the first weekly award for the Fighting Knight men this season.

Both squads are back in action tonight, Jan. 2, 2019, to ring in the New Year with home tilts against Saint Leo University. The women's tip will be at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game immediately following at 7:30 p.m. from the de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center.
