Melbourne, Fla. – Lynn University captured the 2018-19 men's division of the Sunshine State Conference Mayor's Cup all-sports trophy as was announced on Tuesday morning. This is the fourth Mayors' Cup for the Fighting Knights, and first since 2014-15, and moves Lynn into third all-time in league history.
First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award was traditionally sponsored by the Mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.
"The Mayor's Cup award is a reflection of our Fighting Knights attributes of Spirit, Service and Strength," said Director of Athletics Devin Crosby. "Our head coaches recruit the elite student-athletes of the world, they establish team cultures founded in honor and they expect absolute excellence in every aspect of their students' collegiate experience. Their winning has become the by-product of our Lynn University culture."
Lynn finished in the top-three in five of the eight sponsored sports, including winning the first regular season lacrosse title in school history and finishing as runner-up in basketball and tennis. Those three sports collected 28 of the league-best 50.5 points.
This season began with the men's soccer team tying for third in the conference en route to finishing as the NCAA South Region runners-up. Men's basketball then exploded for 25 victories, the most since 2004-05, before taking second in the SSC Championship and advancing to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015.
The spring brought more success with men's lacrosse winning the program's first SSC title and 40th in school history. Men's golf later claimed second place at the SSC Championship before the men's tennis team followed suit. Both teams moved on to NCAA competition where men's tennis made their 17th consecutive appearance and men's golf won the NCAA South/South Regional for the third time and has qualified for the national championship for the seventh consecutive season and 12th overall.
Nova Southeastern finished second with conference titles in basketball and swimming while Florida Southern was third despite not winning a league crown.
Lynn finished tied for fifth on the women's side, its best finish since 2008-09. Tampa claimed the Women's Mayor's cup with 75.5 points, winning four conference titles with two runner-up finishes.
Mayors' Cup scoring is based on regular season finish for sports with conference standings and championship finish for cross country, golf, rowing, and swimming. For sports where all schools compete, scoring begins with 11 points awarded for finishing first to one point for finishing eleventh. In sports where fewer than 11 teams compete, first place points will be awarded based on the number of teams competing. Head-to-head results will break SSC regular season standings so that points may be assigned. When head-to-head competition cannot break a tie Mayors' Cup points will be split.
