Normal, Ill. – Recent Lynn University baseball alums Ryan Lashley and Jason Matusik are the latest to sign professional contracts after both inked deals with the Normal Cornbelters of the Independent Frontier League.

“It is great to see two well-deserving players move on and continue their baseball careers,” said head coach Rudy Garbalosa.  “I look forward them doing well throughout their professional careers, and as Paddy Matera can attest, hard work and perseverance can help lead these guys to a potential major league landing spot.”

A member of the Blue & White for just one season, Lashley batted .304 with 28 runs batted in and 34 runs scored while belting a team-high eight home runs.  He ranked among the top-15 of the Sunshine State Conference in home runs (fourth) and total bases (88-12th).  Prior to joining Lynn, Lashley was a standout for NCAA Division I Stetson, where he earned ABCA Freshman All-America recognition.

Matusik developed into one of the top players in the SSC as a senior, earning SSC Player of the Year accolades and becoming just the fourth player in school history to receive All-America honors from three publications (ABCA/Rawlings, Daktronics and NCBWA).  The first baseman set career-highs in every offensive category while ranking among the SSC leaders as he batted .386 with 48 RBI and 34 runs scored. His average ranked third among SSC hitters while his .637 slugging percentage was second. He led the league with 109 total bases, and his 48 runs driven in were also second-best among conference players.

The duo becomes the 15th & 16th players to sign minor league deals and comes on the heels of alumnus Paddy Matera (’09) signing a deal with Major League Baseball’s the Cleveland Indians.

Lynn went 30-20 overall and 13-11 in league play during the 2013 season.  The Fighting Knights return 18 letterwinners, including all-south region pitcher Jed Vandernaald and All-SSC outfielder Enrique Perez.  Fans can read more about the baseball team at LynnFightingKnights.com, ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
