Kale and Boza Sign Professional Contracts
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Two more key pieces of the 2012 Lynn University baseball joined Ryan Gibbard in the professional ranks this past week. Shawn Kale signed with the Abilene Prairie Dogs in Abilene, Texas, while the Swiss Nationalliga A team Therwil Flyers added Anthony Boza.
Kale was signed on Wednesday, June 20, and made his professional debut the next night for the Prairie Dogs, allowing five runs on four hits in a no decision. The ace of the Fighting Knights pitching staff this past season, he garnered Daktronics and ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region recognition after posting a 5-1 record with a 2.56 earned run average and 109 strikeouts in 91.1 innings pitched. Additionally, he came out of the bullpen twice, earning saves in both appearances. The Oldsmar, Fla., product was second in the SSC in K’s, fifth in IP, seventh in opponent batting average (.236) and eighth in ERA. He closed out the year with the third most strikeouts, eighth-lowest ERA and the highest K per nine innings (10.74) in a single season.
Boza batted .388/.456/.707 with 14 homeruns, 18 doubles, 33 runs and 52 RBI in 49 games in becoming the first player in program history to earn South Region Player of the Year honors for three publications (ABCA/Rawlings, Daktronics and NCBWA). Additionally, he joined Nicolas Boisvert and Dan Wright as the only three-time first team All-Americans at Lynn. The Miami, Fla., product posted some extraordinary numbers for LU, appearing in the top-three of eight of the league’s offensive categories. He led the SSC with a .707 slugging percentage, 52 RBI and 133 total bases.
This duo joins Gibbard, a 14th-round selection in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, playing professionally. Gibbard made his debut for the Brewers Advanced Rookie League affiliate, the Helena Brewers, on June 27.
Lynn went 35-15 overall and a program-best 16-6 in the Sunshine State Conference en route to its third NCAA Tournament bid.
