Men's Basketball Signs Michael Birts for Upcoming Season
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lynn University men’s basketball head coach Jeff Price announced the addition of Michael Birts for the upcoming season on Thursday morning. Brits joins the Fighting Knights after a two-year spell at NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. The 6’6”, 220 lb. forward becomes the fifth player to sign with LU since Price returned as head coach in April.
“We are excited to have Michael [Birts] join our program for the next two years,” said Price on Thursday. “He provides us athleticism on the front line and his Division I experience should prove to be invaluable.”
As a freshman, Birts appeared in 25 games for the Cougars earning one start. He averaged 6.3 minutes per game while shooting 38.9 percent from the field. He scored a career-high seven points against Robert Morris-Springfield on December 19, 2012 and played in eight games during his sophomore season.
A graduate of South Dade High School in Miami, Fla., Birts earned All-Dade County Honorable Mention as a senior. He was selected for the Dade vs. Broward County all-star game and was named the Miami Herald Athlete of the Week on December 13, 2010.
Birts, along with the four other signees, joins six returners from last season’s squad which went 11-16 overall in the 2012-13 season. Price rejoined the Lynn community after a 14-year absence where he coached at the Division I level. He was the founding coach of the men’s basketball program at Lynn University in 1993 and took the Fighting Knights to six post season appearances in six seasons.
