Miami Shores, Fla. – Down but not out, Lynn University’s men’s basketball team overcame an 18-point deficit to knock off rival Barry University 71-66 on Wednesday night. Kevin Ohen had his best game as a member of the Fighting Knights with a team-high 24 points and nine rebounds while Pavle Raickovic chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and a block. Lynn improves to 8-4 overall and picks up its first league victory to move to 2-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Not much went in the favor of the Blue & White in the first half as the team shot just 37 percent from the field in trailing 34-16 with 5:31 to play in the period. Not panicking, LU chipped away with a pair of Brandon Smith three-pointers followed by a three-point play from Kaleb Clyburn to close the gap to four, 37-33, heading into the locker room.
Barry’s struggles carried over into the second half with Justin McCoy missing on two free-throws seconds into play. McCoy, though, finished with a game-high 29 points. The Buccaneers (6-5, 1-1 SSC) were holding on by a thread until the first media timeout when LU made a 13-0 run to grab its first lead of the contest.
Ohen ignited the run with a three-point play on a fast break while Shamel Akins, Slobodan Miljanic, Clyburn and Rackovic all contributed baskets. Lynn never looked back and bunkered down on defense, holding BU to one field goal in its last 10 attempts until a layup by McCoy as time expired.
The Fighting Knights nearly doubled their second-half shooting percentage, hitting 61.1 percent from the field to finish with a 46.7 percent mark. Conversely, Barry hit 44.4 percent in the first half and 32 percent in the second to close out play at 38.5 percent. The Blue & White also scored 20 points off 18 Buccaneer turnovers as Ohen logged four steals himself.
Lynn returns to the court on Saturday, January 12, at 4 p.m. when it hosts 20th-ranked University of Tampa. Fans can watch the game live at LYNNFightingKnights.com and receive in-game tweets by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
