Knights Fight Back but Fall Short to Palm Beach Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University Men’s Basketball erased a 20 point deficit but unfortunately fell short to Palm Beach Atlantic ,72-71 on Wednesday night. The win gave Palm Beach Atlantic their first of the season to bring their record to 1-2, while Lynn falls to 1-1. Marcus Hardy led the visiting Sailfish with a game-high 23 points, as Kaleb Clyburn scored 17 for the Blue and White.
Palm Beach Atlantic started the game with nine fast points before Lynn was able to score a basket. The Sailfish took off and left the Fighting Knights behind. With 1:05 remaining in the first half Lynn trailed by 20 points, the highest margin in the game. PBA held on to secure a substantial lead, 44-26 at halftime.
Dante Valentine led all scorers in the first half with 16 points for the Sailfish. The victors shot 51.4% from the field and pulled down 19 boards while the Blue and White shot 36% and had 12 turnovers. Brandon Smith led the Fighting Knights with eight points and three rebounds.
LU came back fighting after halftime and immediately cut the deficit to ten at 16:14. Back and forth baskets kept the Fighting Knights out of reach until Reed Ridder nailed a trey to bring the Blue and White within reach, trailing 60-53 with 7:58 remaining. With five minutes left in regulation Lynn trailed by three.
An exchange of baskets passed time until Clyburn was fouled on a layup and was awarded a trip to the charity line. With ten seconds remaining Lynn trailed by only two. After a Salim Fauras layup for the Sailfish, Smith answered back with a bucket from just behind the arc. Three seconds remained on the clock as Dante Scholl stole the ball from PBA senior Matthew Gierl. Gierl fouled Scholl with one second remaining which sent him to the free throw line. Scholl was unable to connect on the pair of free throws and as the ball rebounded the buzzer went off.
Lynn improved their shooting percent in the second half to 53.3% and connected on seven out of 13 shots from behind the arc. The Sailfish shot only 36% in the second half while grabbing 37 boards. Dante Valentine recorded a double-double of 18 points and ten rebounds while four Knights Scored double figures.
