Men’s Basketball Romps Lions

BOCA RATON, Fla.—Lynn University’s men’s basketball team totaled nine players in the scoring column en route to a 61-50 win over the Saint Leo Lions in Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday.
Jeremy Lampkin led Lynn (12-10, 5-5 SSC) with 11 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Brandon Smith followed Lampkin with 10 points as the only other Fighting Knight in double-digits.
The first half went back-and-forth with Lynn taking a one point lead at the 14:42 mark over Saint Leo (9-10, 3-6 SSC). Lynn then rattled off five-straight points to go up by six capped off by a Preye Preboye three pointer with 13:26 left in the half.
With 4:38 left in the first half, the Blue & White totaled an 11 point tilt on two Jerrell Oxendine free throws. Saint Leo cut the Lynn advantage down to seven with under a minute and a half left in the period before the Knights ended the period on a 6-0 run to go into the locker room up 34-21.
Lynn held Saint Leo to a mere 26.7 shooting percentage for the first half and a 1-for-7 mark from behind the arc. LU countered with a 54 percent shooting clip which included a 5-for-9 mark from downtown.
On a Lampkin layup, Lynn stretched its advantage to the largest of the game up 38-22 with 17:34 remaining.
The Lions trimmed the lead down to nine on several occasions but every time the Fighting Knights responded and pushed their advantage back to double-digits.
At the 1:15 mark, Lynn’s 16-point tilt had been cut to only six but Josh Garcia connected on two free throws to make it a three possession game with one minute left in regulation. Lynn continued to knock down free throws to bury the Lions by 11 points.
Lynn amassed a season-best 86.4 team free-throw percentage and tallied a 44 percent mark from the field while connecting on 6-for-17 from 3-point land. The Knights held Saint Leo to 30 percent shooting and only two made 3-pointers on the game. The Lynn bench out-scored Saint Leo’s by 20 points in the win.
