Men’s Basketball Conquers the Spartans
TAMPA, Fla.-Lynn University’s men’s basketball team traveled to Tampa with a mission on Saturday afternoon. After 40 minutes of competitive basketball, the mission was complete. Lynn secured a 71-61 victory over Tampa with the help of three Fighting Knights scoring in double-digits. Kaleb Clyburn’s 22-points, shooting four for five from downtown, led the Knights while Shamel Akins and Brandon Smith added 19 points and 14 points, respectively.
On the defensive side, senior Jeremy Lampkin led the team with nine rebounds. With the victory, Lynn moves to above .500 with an 11-10 record overall, while picking up its third Sunshine State Conference victory to stand at 3-8. The Spartans, 16-7 overall, drop to 3-7 in the SSC. Two of Tampa’s conference losses this season were dealt by the Blue and White.
Lynn took an early lead when Slobodan Miljanic found Lampkin for a layup to put the Fighting Knights up 2-1. LU would not trail again in opening half after giving up the first point. Lynn capitalized on Tampa's 10 turnovers to lead by as many as 12. Led by Akins and Smith, who each scored eight points, Lynn entered the intermission up 30-26. As a team, LU shot 46.2 percent from behind the arc and 41.4 percent from the field in the first half.
Tampa would go on a 6-2 run in the opening two minutes of the half to knot up the score at 32-all. A quick five point spree put the Fighting Knights back up, and a pair of free throws from Akins set the score at 39-32. Tampa made it a one-possession game before three pointers by Miljanic and Smith made the score 46-40. The Spartans would only be able to close the gap to two one more time. The Fighting Knights saw their biggest lead, of 13, in the final minute of the game as a Pavle Raickovic free throw put Lynn up 71-58.
