Savannah, Ga. – Lynn University’s women’s basketball team opened the season 4-0 for the first time since 2009-10 with a 66-60 victory over Flagler in the Fairfield Inn & Suites Pirate Classic. Kira Harvey continues to be a double-double machine, logging her third consecutive with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
The Fighting Knights suffocating defense only forced eight first half turnovers but held the Saints (0-2) to a mere 25 percent shooting in taking a 30-27 lead into the locker room. Lynn never trailed in the period and built up a lead by as many as 11.
Flagler would go ahead for the first time in the contest just minutes into the second period but Harvey would immediately respond with a jumper in the paint. The two squads exchanged baskets until the Saints were able to go on a 5-0 to build their largest advantage, 45-41, with 10:49 to play.
Lynn answered back behind Harvey, Tylar Tracy and Shatorria Baker to force the fifth tie of the game, 50-50. Free throws proved to be pivotal down the stretch LU scored 12 of its final 14 points at the charity stripe. Harvey connected on 10 straight, and hit 17-of-19 overall, while Amanda Schultz added a pair of freebies.
The Fighting Knights knocked down 94.1 percent of their free-throws in the second half and 84.6 percent overall. Lynn also shot 35 percent from the field compared to Flagler’s 29.7 percent shooting.
Schultz was second on the team with 11 points and seven rebounds and Charla Nelson-James contributed seven boards and two blocks.
Lynn returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, November 21, at 2 p.m. when it hosts Northwood (Fla.) University. Fans can listen to the contest live at LynnFightingKnights.com. Don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
