Last Second Shot Drops Women’s Basketball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University’s quest to knock off a second nationally-ranked team in as many weeks hit a snag following a three-pointer with 2.6 seconds remaining by No. 20 Nova Southeastern as the Fighting Knights women’s basketball team fell 69-67 on Saturday afternoon. Kira Harvey led all players with 27 points and nine rebounds while three teammates also scored in double-digits. Lynn drops to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Nova Southeastern (13-4, 5-2 SSC) was able to build up a 15-4 lead in the early-goings behind five points from Richelle Carach. Harvey scored 12 of the team’s next 17 points to pull the Blue & White to within one before Tifani Kerrison gave LU its first lead of the game with a running jumper in the paint.
The Fighting Knights dominated the rest of the half with Tylar Tracy draining consecutive three pointers to help her team to a 36-29 halftime lead. Tracy finished with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Lynn built up a double-digit advantage in the second half with Charla Nelson-James providing the offensive spark. The sophomore forward was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and was 2-for-3 at the free-throw line, scoring all 10 points over the final 20 minutes.
Turnovers, though, hurt Lynn badly in the second half. The team finished with 20 turnovers, marring a day in which it shot 49.1 percent from the field.
Additionally, Amanda Burakoski scored 15 of her team-high 17 points in the second half to guide the Sharks back. Burakoski scored NSU’s final seven points, including a three-pointer from the left corner to pull off the come-from-behind victory.
Shatorria Baker notched 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and Harvey finished the day 10-of-17 from the field, 1-for-3 from three-point range and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Nova Southeastern hit 41.5 percent of its shots but was knocked-down a miniscule 33.3 percent at the free-throw line (7-for-21).
The Fighting Knights close out the month of January at the friendly confines of the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center with a 5:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, January 30, against Eckerd College.
