Kissimmee, Fla. – Lynn University’s women’s basketball team kept pace with Saint Leo for much of the game but a late run by the Lions ended the Fighting Knights season with a 70-57 loss in the Sunshine State Conference Championship. Zachara Bailey, Isidora Madzarevic and Tyler Tracy combined for 27 points. Lynn ends the year with an 11-16 overall mark.
Tough defenses by both teams highlighted the opening minutes of the game with Saint Leo (19-8) holding a 9-6 lead after the second media timeout. Madzarevic, though, snapped the Blue & White out of their offensive funk with a three from the left wing to give her squad its first lead of the game, 11-9.
The two squads combined for four ties and four lead changes with SLU taking the largest-lead, 29-20, with 4:34 in the first half. Bailey and Tracy combined on four more points and Sharneka McCatty knocked down a jumper just inside the three-point line to put Lynn down 35-29 at the break.
The Fighting Knights made it rain from downtown at the start of the second half as Madzarevic and Tracy erased their team’s deficit with three treys. McCatty drew an and one foul while Shatorria Baker hit a pair of shots at the free-throw line to give the Blue & White a 45-40 advantage.
Teresa Manigrasso proved too much at the end as the senior guard would go on to score 15 of her game-high 34 points over the next 10 minutes to help Saint Leo build a 66-50 lead.
McCatty led Lynn with eight rebounds while Baker and Tracy each pulled down seven apiece. Nina Guillaume added eight points and six boards off the bench.
Lynn shot 31.8 percent from the field and a solid 36.4 percent from beyond the arc compared to Saint Leo, which shot 46.7 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from three-point range.
The Fighting Knights return all five starters and 11 letterwinners for next season.
