BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lynn University’s women’s basketball team fell 59-57 to defending NCAA Division II national champions and 14th-ranked Shaw on Wednesday but not without a fight. Kira Harvey led LU with 13 points, followed by Amanda Schultz with 11. The Fighting Knights head into the New Year with a 7-3 overall mark.
Trailing by one, 29-28, heading into the half, Zachara Bailey keyed a 7-0 with two fast break lay-ups off steals to pull the Blue & White ahead 35-29. Lynn’s offense started to rev from there as eight points combined from Harvey and Schultz gave the Fighting Knights their largest lead of the day, 43-31.
Shaw (5-1) had other thoughts of an upset, though. The Bears went on a 14-0 run and held Lynn scoreless over a six and a half minute span before Tashina Bailey knocked down a jumper in the paint with 5:33 remaining to pull LU to within 51-50.
Schultz followed with a jumper at the top of the key and a three off the backboard to give the Fighting Knights a 55-51 advantage with 4:22 to play.
The two squads went back and forth in their attempts to grab a lead but steals and blocked shots kept the game in Lynn’s favor until a layup in traffic by Crystal Wilson knotted the contest at 57-57. Crystal Harris then followed with a baseline jumper to put the Bears in the lead 59-57, with 1:33 left to play.
Lynn frantically attempted to tie the game but Shaw’s defense stymied the Blue & White into three missed shots to secure the victory.
The game looked as though it would be a high scoring affair after the Bears won the opening tip-off and scored three seconds later. Shaw pushed a high-tempo offense but Lynn forced 15 first-half turnovers and held Shaw to 33.3 percent shooting.
Overall, LU shot 38.6 percent from the field and 60 percent from the free-throw line while SU was 33.9 % from the hardwood and 66.7 percent at the charity stripe.
Harvey added eight rebounds, three assists and a game-high four steals. Charla Nelson James had five boards and three blocks. Kearah Jeffreys lead all scorers with 15 points while Taylor Dalrymple recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Fighting Knights return to action following the New Year when they travel to Saint Leo, Fla., to battle the Saint Leo University Lions on January 5. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. Fans can catch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game tweets by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
