Cross Country Back in Action at Lynn
BOCA RATON, Fla.—Lynn University’s women’s cross country team returns to the field of competition for the 2012 season after an 11 year absence.
With six events donning the LU cross country schedule this season, first-year head coach Niki Alvarez has high hopes for her young squad. Alvarez has assembled five freshmen and one junior to compete as Fighting Knights this year.
“One of our goals throughout the season is to simply grow stronger as a team,” Alvarez said. “Just in the past two weeks alone I have seen our girls get better and better.”
Gabriella Wuyke represents the lone upper classman on the squad. Wuyke, a junior from East Lyme, Conn., played one season for the Blue & White’s women’s soccer team before taking a year off and now joining the cross country squad.
“I expect Gabriella Wuyke to be a player in the top-10 at the conference championship,” Alvarez said. “With our schedule, she [Wuyke] will have some great competition throughout the year and then when we get to the conference meet I expect be able to run with the best the conference has to offer.”
Coach Alvarez and her Fighting Knights first travel to Tampa, Fla., for the Tampa Invite on Aug. 31, then return back to Tampa for the USF Invite on Sept. 7. On Sept. 22, LU makes the trip to Daytona for the Embry Riddle 5K before competing in the Disney Invite in Orlando, Fla., then the UCF 5K less than a week later in Orlando as well. The conference championship is hosted by Rollins and set for Oct. 20, in Winter Park, Fla.
In addition to Wuyke, freshman Sara Harmouch from Tripoli, Lebanon, freshman Stephanie McGowan from Lighthouse Point, Fla., freshman Dara Mohan, freshman Jesika Osborn from Columbia, Mo., and freshman Kinsey Roberts from Wilmington, Ohio join in Lynn’s return of cross country.
