Young Carries Men’s Golf to Fourth Victory

Orlando, Fla. – Lynn University’s men’s golf team got back to its winning ways, finishing as the co-champion with Barton at the Golfweek Spring Invitational. This is the fourth tournament victory for the Fighting Knights in six tournaments. Daniel Young was the star of the afternoon, shooting a career-best 65 in the final round as LU shot 11-under par as a team.
The sophomore out of Perth, Scotland, began the day with scores of 80-75 but finished strongly by shooting par or better on 16 of 18 holes, including nine birdies. He closed out the 54-hole event tied for 28th individually.
Ricardo Gouviea and Pepito Joia each placed within the top-10 with the Barcelona duo tying for fourth and sixth place. Gouveia was seven-under for the tournament after carding scores of 69-71-69 while Joia was two-under with a 70-72-72 214 total.
Jacopo Mazzola had the largest turnaround of the event. After posting an 84 in the second round, Mazzola shot a one-under 71 for a 227 total. Shane Smyth rounded out Lynn’s starting five with a 228. Paul McPhee also saw action as an individual and had the best 54-hole score of his young career. The freshman out of Perth, Scotland shot a career-low 72 for a 226, one stroke better than his previous best.
Lynn (857) posted a tournament and season-best 277 in the third round, making the jump for its first victory of the spring season. Barton got two birdies on the final hole to earn co-champion accolades. Abilene Christian (863) was six-strokes back to take third followed by CSU-Monterey Bay (869) and Nova Southeastern (873).
The Fighting Knights will look for win No. 5 at the Southeastern Collegiate Classic in Valdosta, Ga., beginning on Sunday, March 13.
