Men’s Golf Cracks the Case! Wins Matlock Invite
Lakeland, Fla. – Lynn University’s 19th-ranked men’s golf team earned its second win in as many weeks after topping a field of 15 teams, 10 of which rank in the national top-25, to win the 33rd Annual Matlock Collegiate Invitational. A week after tying for the eighth-lowest 54-hole score in school history, Ernesto Vitienes tied the ninth-lowest score with a 209 total to finish second overall.
The Fighting Knights shot a three-under par 285 as a team to finish with a 12-under 852, six shots better than fourth-ranked Barry (858). Seventeenth-ranked Armstrong tied with No. 15 Nova Southeastern (863) for third and Florida Tech (877) held on by a stroke over No. 2 USC-Aiken for fifth. Top-ranked West Florida finished 27 shots behind the Blue & White while No. 5 Columbus State was 50 strokes behind.
As a team, Lynn led the field in par four (+8) and par five scoring (-21) and total pars (179) while tying for the birdie lead (49). Lynn also posted the third-lowest score at the Matlock in the last 17 years.
Vitienes has been on a tear in the spring semester, averaging a 69.5 stroke average in two tournaments. The senior from Santo Domingo, Domincan Republic was tied for third in par four scoring (-3) and tied for ninth in par five scoring (-5). He also tied for sixth in total birdies (12) and tied for eighth in total pars (37).
Keith Greene continued with his steady play, posting a one-under 71 on the final day of the 7,065-yard, par 72 Lone Palm Golf Course. He shot a one-under 215 to tie for ninth individually. Greene also tied for the lead in the field with 40 pars.
Jose Miranda had difficulties on the final day and ended the 54-hole event with a 219 while Elliott Whitley was a shot behind at 219. Paul McPhee ended his play on an extremely high note, shooting a career-best 68 on the last day of competition. The senior out of Perth, Scotland ended the tournament five-under on par five holes.
