Savannah, Ga. – Lynn University’s men’s golf team finished seven shots shy of winning its third consecutive tournament, instead taking third place at the Armstrong Pirate Invitational. Elliott Whitley had his best day as a member of the Fighting Knights, tying for third overall.
Trailing by nine heading into the final 18 holes, the Blue & White (863) shot a team-best 287 but could only make up three strokes on the eventual winners, Nova Southeastern (857). Host Armstrong Atlantic (858) needed to recoup two strokes but could only best the Sharks by one shot on the last day. The Sunshine State Conference rounded out the top-five with Florida Southern (882) and Saint Leo (886).
Lynn as a whole led the 17-team field in par five scoring at 15-under and tied with NSU for the tournament lead with 48 birdies. The Fighting Knights were also sixth with 156 pars and third in par four scoring (+23).
Whitley bested his previous 54-hole career-low by one shot with a 211 while his overall finished equaled his best finish set at the Titan Winter Invite. The sophomore from Ontario, Canada, turned in a scorecard with scores of 70-71-70 to close out of play two-under par on the 6,897-yard, par 71 Savannah Quarters Country Club Course. He was one of just six players out of 90 to finish under-par for the tournament.
Jose Miranda just missed a top-10 finish, tying for 12th individually after posting a two-over 73 on the afternoon. Ernesto Vitienes notched a second consecutive 72 to shoot 218 overall. Junior Keith Greene also had a respectable day on the links, shooting a 72 to finish with a 220 while Paul McPhee posted a 231, respectively.
Freshman Martin Cancino carded a 221 after shooting a 73 on the final day of his second career tournament.
The Fighting Knights are back in action at the Southeastern Collegiate hosted by Valdosta State in Valdosta, Ga., starting Monday, March 10. Fans can receive updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
