Earnest Job as Vitienes and Men’s Golf Win Spring Season Opener
Melbourne, Fla. – Lynn University’s men’s golf team is off to a fast start to the 2014 season following a first place finish at the Titan Winter Invitational. In addition, Ernesto Vitienes won his first career tournament following a final round 64 while Elliott Whitley also garnered All-Tournament accolades by finishing fourth at the Sun Tree Country Club. This is the best finish for the Fighting Knights at the Titan Winter Invitational in four appearances.
“I thought our guys really played well today, especially Ernesto [Vitienes],” said head coach Andrew Danna. “Today was probably one of the best rounds of golf I have ever had the pleasure of being a coach for. Credit to Ernesto for playing so well and the rest of the team for being clutch when we needed it.”
A senior out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Vitienes tied the school record for an 18-hole score and tied for the eighth-lowest 54-hole score with a 208 total. He surpassed his previous career best totals by five shots over 18 holes and nine shots in a 54-hole tournament. Southeastern’s Kyle Martin took second with a 210.
While Vitienes was pacing the field, Whitley was quietly having a solid tournament. A sophomore out of Ontario, Canada, he shot 70-69-73 for a 212 total, good for fourth overall. Whitley tied his season-best total in the second round and topped his previous 54-hole score by two shots.
Jose Miranda, Paul McPhee and Andrea De Bono rounded out the starting five members of the Blue & White. Miranda closed out the two-day event with a 220 total, McPhee shot a season-best 222 while De Bono had a career-best 72 in the second round en route to a personal-low 224 total.
Lynn also saw Keith Greene participate as an individual. Greene posted scores of 73-73-72 for a 218 score and top-10 finish. Lynn’s previous best finish at the Titan Invitational was second in 2007 while it also claimed sixth in 2006 and fifth in 2003.
