Women’s Golf Sits Second After Round One of NCAA National Championships

Daytona Beach, Fla.- Lynn University’s women’s golf team sits in second place after the opening round of the NCAA National Championships held at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Fighting Knights totaled a 301 on the 6,228-yard, par 72 course and were led by junior Ellen Chambers who shot two strokes over par tied in seventh place with five other golfers.

 LU began the day on the back nine holes with Jessica Bradley shooting even with par through the first nine holes. Chambers and Irene Calvo finished each finished the first nine holes two shots over par while Samantha Smolen and Louise Manalo finished three strokes and four strokes over par, respectively. 

Back-to-back birdies by Chambers on holes five and six paced her to finish the front nine even with par, carding a 74 for the day.  Manalo shot for par on the front eight holes before finishing her day with a birdie on hole nine, for a opening round score of 75. Bradley and Calvo finished the day each shooting a 76 while Smolen finished with an 81. 

The Blue &  White has played the Legends Course at LPGA International three times this season, placing first at all three events. Manalo’s 75 was a season best for the course while the team tied its second best score on the course, previously reached in the second round of the NCAA DII Fall Preview. The Knights best round on the course was 295 at the SMSU Spring Invite, March 14-15. 

After the first round of competition, Nova Southeastern (+4) sits atop the leader board followed by Lynn (+13), Barry (+14), St. Edward’s (+16), and Grand Canyon (+21). NSU’s Daniela Ortiz leads all golfers after carding a 67 with Barry’s Nancy Vergara four stokes behind her at one shot under par. 

LU’s second round tee time is set for 8:30 starting at hole one. The Fighting Knights will be grouped with the University of Indianapolis and St. Edward’s.
