Women's Golf Closes Gap With 288 in Second Round of NCAA Championships

Daytona Beach, Fla.- Lynn University’s women’s golf team shot 288 in the second round of the NCAA DII National Championships held at the LPGA International Legends Course on Thursday. The Fighting Knights were led by Louise Manalo and Samantha Smolen, who both carded a 69 on the 6,228-yard par 72 course. Manalo’s score marks a career best for the sophomore while the squad shot its lowest round of the season, taking four strokes off its previous mark.

LU began the day +13 with a second place standing behind defending National Champions, Nova Southeastern. Manalo set the tone for the day with back-to-back birdies on the second and third hole. She led the team through the front nine, shooting three under par after she picked up her third birdie of the day on hole No. 7. Smolen also shot under par through nine, by two strokes, with birdies on holes No. 2  and No. 5. 

Ellen Chambers continued her consistent performance managing a 73 on the day, one stroke better than the opening round. Jessica Bradley finished the day with a 77 while Irene Calvo carded an 82. 

Lynn (589) sits three strokes behind first place Nova Southeastern (586), while Barry (596), St. Edward’s (613), and Grand Canyon (614) round out the top five teams. NSU’s Daniela Ortiz still tops the player leader board while Lynn’s Manalo sits in fifth overall and Chambers remains seventh place with in a four-way tie.
