Kiawah Island, Fla. – Lynn University’s women’s golf team became just the second school to repeat as champions of the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in the 11-year history of the tournament.  Adding more to celebrate, Samantha Smolen claimed top individual honors by tying a school record with a 36-hole total of 142 and Ellen Chambers finished second.

The sixth-ranked Fighting Knights were the only team to post consecutive rounds under 300, shooting 297 as a team on the final day for a 592 total, the third-lowest winning score in tournament history.  UNC Pembroke (611), the 18th-ranked squad, made the jump from eighth to second with a final round 302 while No. 20 West Florida (614) maintained its third place finish.  Third-ranked Barry (617) dropped to fourth while Savannah College of Art & Design, the second-ranked team in NAIA rounded out the top-five with a score of 624.

Smolen led the entire way and tied a 17-year program record held by Lynn Hall of Famer Josefin Stalvant. Chambers also had a career-day on the links, topping her previous 36-hole low by four strokes for a 147.  Irene Calvo was the third member of the squad to finish in the top-10, tying for eighth with a 151 score.  Smolen and Calvo have three top-10 finishes this season.

Jessica Bradley and Louise Manalo were not far off from their teammates with scores of 152 and 154, respectively, tying for 13th and 16th individually.

Lynn joins Florida Southern (2008 & 2009) as the only other repeat winners of the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate hosted at Cougar Point Golf Club at Kiawah Island.

The Fighting Knights return to the links on Monday, February 25, when they participate in the Lady Moc Classic.
