Women’s Golf Maintains Lead in NCAA Super Regional
Dade City, Fla. – Lynn University’s top-ranked women’s golf team experienced some bumps and detours over the opening half of the second day but finished strongly to increase its lead to 11 strokes at the NCAA Division II Super Region 2 Tournament. Ellen Chambers shot a tournament-best 69 to grab first place individually with Louise Manalo hot on her tail in a tie for second place.
The Fighting Knights began the day with a four-shot lead but saw it vanish before the turn as they moved into a tie with Barry. Lynn quickly gathered itself and shot five-under as a team on the back nine, finishing with a three-over 291 for the day and 588 total. The Buccaneers cooled a bit but still shot 295 and have a 599 total through two days. The fight for the final national championship spot will come down to a battle between Florida Tech (607) and Rollins (608) as the two teams are separated by one stroke.
Chambers turned in one of her best performances for the Blue & White, playing nearly flawless golf over 18 holes. After a bogey on the par three fourth hole, the senior from Petrie, Australia rattled off 10 pars and four birdies to finish with a career-low round. Chambers leads the field with a 141 total, which is a career-best through 36 holes.
Manalo was almost equally impressive. The junior out of Brussels, Belgium, was two-over par through nine holes but ended the day with a pair of birdies and seven pars to shoot even for the second round. Manalo’s 147 put her into a three-way tie for second place.
Samantha Smolen and Irene Calvo combined to shoot six-over in the front nine but roared back to log four birdies in the next nine holes. They would conclude play with scores of 75 apiece. A day after posting an even par 72, Jessica Bradley ran into some troubles on day two, ending play with an 80.
Calvo will be the first to tee off for Lynn in the final round of the NCAA Super Regional, taking the tee box at 10:30 a.m. Smolen takes her first shot at 10:40 a.m. followed by Bradley at 10:50, Louise Manalo at 11 a.m. and Ellen Chambers at 11:10. The Fighting Knights will be paired with Barry and Florida Tech.
