Women’s Golf Takes Second at Saint Leo Invite
Saint Leo, Fla. – Lynn University’s women’s golf team closed out its fall competition with a second-place finish at the Saint Leo Invitational. Samantha Smolen shot a 36-hole career-best148 en route to a fifth place finish while Jessica Bradley and Ellen Chambers also finished in the top-10.
Smolen finished among the tournament leaders in birdies (five) and pars (23) while being the second-lowest par 4 scorer (+1). Her 148 is one stroke better than her previous personal-best. Bradley and Chambers each carded scores of 150 to tie for sixth individually. Irene Calvo recovered from a difficult first round, improving by 11 strokes for a second round 77 while Louise Manalo added a 159 over 36-holes.
Nezha Haddioui also regained her footing on the links with a 77 in the final round to finish with a 160 total as an individual. Estefania Buritica recorded a 164, respectively.
Nova Southeastern (586) overtook the Fighting Knights (602) for first after scoring a two-under par 286 as a team compared to LU’s 306. Lynn had to fend off Florida Southern (604) in the top-three while host Saint Leo (607) and Barry (612) duked it out for fourth and fifth place.
The Blue & White completed Fall competition with three top-five finishes, including a victory at the NCAA DII Fall Preview and runner-up finish at the Saint Leo Invitational. Lynn will return to the links on February 2, 2013, when it defends its title at the Kiawah Island/Tusculum Women’s Intercollegiate.
