BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's men's basketball team (9-2) is off to its first 3-0 start in the Sunshine State Conference since the 2006-07 season after a 82-64 rout of Nova Southeastern (5-6, 1-2 SSC) at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center on Wednesday night. David Johnson and Aaron Harrison scored a team-high 16 points apiece while three other Fighting Knights logged double-figures.
Lynn opened the game on a 10-0 run before a three-pointer by Maurice Fuller got the Sharks on the board. Kaleb Clyburn answered back with a trey to extend Lynn's lead back to ten, 13-3, with 14 minutes to go. The Blue & White maintained a 10-point cushion for the first half of the 20 minute period. A three pointer by Stian Berg would cut NSU's deficit to seven, 22-15, with fewer than nine minutes to play. A put-back by Harrison Goodrick would bring it within five, but Clyburn answered back with a shot from downtown to give Lynn back its seven point spread. Lynn pulled ahead by as many as 21 to end the half with a 49-28 lead.
The Blue & White shot an impressive 57.6 percent from the field in the opening frame and made seven-of-ten shots from three-point range. Lynn's defense held the Sharks to 30.8 percent from the field and allowed them to make just one two-point shot. NSU connected on seven treys to shoot 53.8 percent from behind the arc. The Fighting Knights scored 22 points in the paint while Nova Southeastern had just two. The two rivals each had eighteen rebounds but Lynn edged NSU 13-12 in defensive boards.
Johnson had a team-best 12 points in the opening frame and Ben Berry followed suit with 11 points shooting four-for-five from the field. Clyburn had eight points with a pair of three-pointers and Pavle Raickovic and Aaron Harrison each had six points. Junior Russell Wilson led all players with six assists in the half.
Nova Southeastern slowly chipped away at the Fighting Knights' lead in the second half, and trailed by 11, 56-45, with 12 minutes left in regulation. NSU was relentless bringing the score within ten however back-to-back treys by Clyburn and Harrison would extend Lynn's lead to 16. A fast-break layup by Fred Landers with 8:19 remaining had The Blue & White ahead by 18 points. The Fighting Knights held on for a 82-64 win to improve to 3-0 in SSC action.
The Fighting Knights shot 52.4 percent from the field in the second half and held the Sharks to 39.3 percent. The two teams each had 14 rebounds but Lynn edged NSU once again in defensive rebounds, 12-9. Harrison had 10 points in the second half and Landers added nine shooting three-for-three from the field.
In the victory, Lynn shot 55.6 percent overall and made 16 steals. Wilson assisted nine baskets while Raickovic blocked four shots adding six points and four rebounds. Clyburn had 15 points connecting on three-of-four shots from behind the arc and Landers and Berry added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
