BOCA RATON, Fla. – Martin Wehlert, a senior at Lynn University, is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship.  Lynn becomes just the third school in NCAA Division II history to garner back-to-back selections and sixth with at least three student-athletes to earn recognition.

This marks the second consecutive year a member of the Fighting Knights has earned the Elite 89 award and third overall.  Former men’s soccer player Harald Gracholski was selected in 2011 while women’s tennis alum Christine Johnstone was honored in 2010.

Wehlert, majoring in business administration, carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average.  The Halle, Germany, native was presented with the award on the eve of the national semifinals during the men’s soccer banquet on Wednesday evening in Evans, Ga.

In addition to Gracholski and Wehlert, former women’s tennis player Christine Johnstone was selected as the Elite 88 recipient in 2010.

The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

Lynn takes on Mercyhurst in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Championship on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the winner moving on to the national championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m.  Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com or NCAA.com.
