Winter Park, Fla. – Lynn University was overwhelmingly selected as the favorite to repeat as Sunshine State Conference men’s soccer champions in 2012 as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

The Fighting Knights collected 192 points in a preseason poll conducted among SSC head coaches and sports information directors.  Lynn received 16 first-place votes, the highest total possible since each school’s voters are not permitted to rank their own squad.

Barry’s 158 points placed them second, narrowly edging Rollins’ 157 points and two first place votes.  The remainder of the top-five consisted of Florida Tech in fourth with 120 points and Tampa fifth at 100 points.  Saint Leo (94), Eckerd (73), Nova Southeastern (41) and Florida Southern (37) rounded out the poll.

The Blue & White return nine starters and 16 letterwinners from a squad which went 14-5-3 overall and 6-2 in the SSC, claimed the program’s ninth conference title and finished as the 2011 NCAA Division II national runners-up.

Among the Lynn starters returning include a trio of All-SSC honorees from a year ago.  Midfielder Heiko Eberhardt garnered first team recognition in addition to his Daktronics Third Team All-America accolades.  Defender Jason Sangha earned SSC Freshman of the Year accolades and All-America honors while goal keeper Matt DiCerbo’s league-best 0.62 goals against average and 10 shutouts placed him on the conference second team.

The Fighting Knights open the season August 31, in Banner Elk, N.C., when they take on Lees-McRea.  For more information, log on to LynnFightingKnights.com, ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter.
