BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University’s men’s soccer team won 1-0 over Anderson in the final game of the 2012 Wyndham Boca Raton Soccer Classic on Saturday. Yannick Braeuer came through in the clutch for the Fighting Knights, scoring the game-winning goal with eight minutes remaining in regulation as the second-ranked Fighting Knights remained undefeated at 4-0-0 on the year.

The match was physical from the start but opportunities were limited as the two teams combined for a mere six shots, of which just three were on target.  Julian Halder missed on the chance for his fifth goal in the 25th minute with a shot inside the box after Lukas Hesse made a diving stop.  Likewise, Matt DiCerbo kept the game knotted at one in the 31st minute with an amazing diving one-on-one save from a Lars Zimmerman shot.

A change in strategy came about for both teams in the second half.  Whereas the Blue & White were content to sit back with short passes on the ground, they came out with long over the top passes from the back.  Conversely, Anderson (0-3-1) moved away from a conservative approach to a straight-on attack on the LU defense.

Zimmerman missed on two shots at the top of the box with a seven minute span while Halder and Johnny Mertle each had opportunities within 20-yards for the Fighting Knights.

However, the impact of the game changed with one call. At the 75:33 mark, Braeuer had a breakaway opening but was taken down from behind the Trojan’s Stefan Veljovic, sending him off the field and forcing Anderson to play a man down. Six minutes later, Braueuer dribbled through the defense off a throw in and scored on a shot to the left side netting for the game-winner.

Lynn had to fight off a pair of last-minute rallies from the Trojans when Will Treichler nearly tied the game with header that missed over the net.   Zimmerman had the final chance with 44 ticks on the clock but his header inside the 18-yard box sailed wide left.

Julian Halder led LU with five shots and three shots on goal. DiCerbo tallied three saves while Jesse turned away four shots.   Overall the Blue & White outshot the Trojans 10-7 and had a 10-4 corner kick advantage.

Lynn returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 12, at 3:30 p.m. when they host No. 25 Saint Leo.  Fans can catch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com.  Don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
