Gooby-Do Solves Panthers Mystery in Men’s Soccer Victory
Melbourne, Fla. – Two goals in a two-and-a-half minute span carried Lynn University’s third-ranked men’s soccer team to a 3-1 win over Florida Tech. The victory gave the Fighting Knights the outright Sunshine State Conference regular season title and assured them of hosting the 2012 SSC Men’s Soccer Championship. Lynn improves to 12-1-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the league.
Kerst Lehman scored the game-winner for LU while Simon Gubisch added a goal and assist in his first career start.
With the match knotted at one following a goal by Gary Ogilvie in the 71st minute, the Fighting Knights began to attack feverishly. Their efforts paid off in the 73rd minute. Gubisch collected a long pass near the top left corner of the box and played a nifty heel ball to Lehman, who dribbled into the six-yard area and wrapped a left-footed shot around the keeper’s hands into the right side-netting for his second goal of the season.
In the 75th minute, Gubisch struck again with the help of Jake Furman and Julian Halder. Furman played a ball to the feet of Halder near the top of the penalty box, who in turn one-touched a pass through two defenders. Gubisch stared down the keeper and fired an attempt past Panthers’ keeper Mitch Thorn to put the match away at 3-1.
Jack Winter recorded a point for the third consecutive match and fifth in his last six games when he assisted on the first goal by Heiko Eberhardt. Eberhardt attempted a well-struck shot from an awkward angle but was still able to beat Thorn at the left post to give LU a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
Lynn outshot Florida Tech (6-3-3, 2-3-2 SSC) 19-9 but was equal with the Panthers in corner kicks 7-7. Thorn turned away four shots while Matt DiCerbo stopped two shots.
The Fighting Knights return to the pitch on Saturday, October 20, at 5 p.m. when they travel to Saint Leo, Fla., to battle Saint Leo University. Fans can catch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com. Don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
