Cleveland, Tenn. – Another goal within the first 10 minutes of play catapulted Lynn University’s top-ranked men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Lee University, helping the Fighting Knights claim the Olive Garden Invitational Trophy.  Anthony Desperito was named the tournament’s most valuable player after recording a goal and two assists while Jake Furman was honored as the most offensive player with two goals in two games.  Lynn improves to 2-0 on the season.

The Blue & White were able to silence a packed and rowdy crowd with an early goal for the second consecutive match.  Although not credited with an assist, midfielder Adam Hutchinson started the play with a sharp ball down the middle of the field to Desperito.  The senior forward turned to face goal and slipped a pass through the Flames (1-1-0) two central defenders, which Yannick Braeuer was able to run on to.  Braeuer took one touch and let loose a shot past a diving Tom Halsall in net within the ninth minute of play.  It marks his third goal in his last five games.

Lynn’s offensive pressure continued for much of the half but provided no fruit until the 30th minute.  Furman and Michael O’Neill combined on a set of passes on the right sideline where O’Neill found himself alone at the right corner.  His cross was perfectly placed in the six-yard box for Desperito but his first two attempts were saved point-blank by Halsall.  The third shot, though, nearly ripped through the back of the net to put LU on top 2-0.

Lee fed off the crowd to start the second half but was turned away at every turn by the defensive back four of Jason Sangha, Javier Mochon, Simon Gubisch and O’Neill.  The foursome limited the Flames to just two shots, none of which was on frame, for the clean sheet.

Lynn outshot Lee 18-2 but was even 3-3 in corner kicks.
