Saint Leo, Fla. — It would take nearly 102 minutes but in the end, Lynn University’s men’s soccer came out on top over Saint Leo 2-1 in overtime. Jake Furman and Michael O’Neil each scored to help improve the Fighting Knights record to 13-2 overall while Saint Leo drops under .500 at 6-7-0.
Lynn controlled the time of possession in the first half, getting two shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes. The Lions would step up their offense, though, advancing the ball deep into Fighting Knight territory before the defensive unit of Jason Sangha, AB Magnusson, Michael Kutscher and O’Neill prevented any shots.
The Blue & White put forth nine shots in the first half with five reaching goal while the Lions only managed one wayward attempt. Julian Halder and Furman each had multiple scoring chances in the half but could not find the go-ahead goal.
After numerous misfires, Lynn capitalized within minutes into the start of the second period as Michael Kutscher crossed the ball from the left corner and found Michael O’Neil for the header to put LU on top 1-0. The Fighting Knights would keep ball on Saint Leo’s side of the ball with two more shots in the following five minutes.
Saint Leo would put more pressure on the Lynn University defense in an attempt to tie the match, and in the 79th minute they succeeded with an equalizer goal off a header. The Lions would later have a chance to take the lead but Matt DiCerbo turned away the SLU shot and the match would go to overtime.
The Fighting Knights would have many chances to score the “golden goal” in OT but none would drop. Lynn attempted four shots in the first OT while holding Saint Leo without a shot. The match would end in the 102nd minute when Heiko Eberhardt set up Furman for the game-winning goal by sending in a cross from the end line. Furman ripped a shot for his first career goal.
