Overland Park, Kans. – Some student-athletes work out and others run to stay in shape over the summer.  That was not enough for Lynn University women’s soccer players Meghan Dolan and Paige Meggison who competed for the St. Louis Scott Gallagher U23 club team and won the United States Adult Soccer Association National Women’s Championship on June 30.

“What a great experience this was playing with a fantastic group of girls,” said Meggison, a senior defender for Lynn.  “The competition throughout the tournament was at such a high level and the final was such an evenly matched game.  I feel like winning the U23 national title has given me even more fuel for the fire to help Lynn win a national championship going into my senior season.  It’s such a great feeling knowing you are a champion, not only for yourself but in knowing you accomplished something special with your friends and teammates.”

With six of the top club programs from across the country advancing to the national tournament, SLSG won its closest match, a 2-1 overtime affair against FC Wisconsin, to claim the title.  Dolan and Meggison’s squad opened the tournament with a 10-0 victory against Louisiana, defeated the Houston Aces 5-0 and Kansas City United 7-1 before taking on Wisconsin.

“This title is special because I was able to share it with girls I’ve played with since middle school,” added Dolan, a junior defensive midfielder who also played half of the matches in net.  “We were put to the test in the championship game against Wisconsin.  Thankfully we scored early and kept them [Wisconsin] in their half until they forced overtime.  This victory made me realize how much more I want to win a national title with Lynn and I’m really looking forward to getting onto the field with my teammates in August.”

The Fighting Knights open their season Saturday, September 7, when they host Ave Maria.  Lynn returns 16 letterwinners and eight starters to join with seven new faces for 2013.  Fans can read up on the women’s soccer team at LynnFightingKnights.com, ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
