St. Petersburg, Fla. – One foul inside the box was the difference in the Lynn University women’s soccer team’s 1-0 loss at Eckerd on Tuesday night. The Fighting Knights outshot the Tritons 14-7 but a penalty kick in the 40th minute was the only scoring in the match. Lynn drops to 3-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Both teams brought aggressiveness in the opening minutes of play but neither team could control the pace of play. Kirstie Schults finally broke free with 10:28 on the scoreboard with an attempt left of its mark. A shot in the 12th minute nearly went into the back of the net but Triton’s keeper Morgan Crescent made the first of her six saves to prevent Schults’ sixth goal of the season.
Lynn’s assertiveness proved to be its undoing with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. With the ball inside the top of the box, LU’s defense pushed over Eckerd’s Abbey Walter to force a penalty kick. Kelsey Butler chose the right direction, moving to the left, but Walter’s shot collected in the side netting for the goal.
The Fighting Knights return to the pitch on Saturday, October 6, at 1 p.m. when they host Florida Southern. Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com. Don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
