St. Augustine, Fla. – Lynn University’s women’s soccer team held a lead late in the match but a goal with four minutes left knotted the contest 2-2, where it would remain after two overtimes against Flagler on Sunday night. Both teams combined for 50 shots as Linzi Martin scored her first career goal for the Fighting Knights, who move to 0-2-1 on the season.
Meghan Dolan stopped a season-high 10 shots while her counterpart, Casey Merson, tallied 11 stops on the night.
A scoreless game was snapped in the 55th minute of play when Taylor Adkins put Flagler (4-0-1) on top 1-0 with a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box. Adkins grabbed a pass from Jessica Jagielski and beat Dolan to the upper right corner for the goal.
Kirstie Schults later tied the game at one in the 75th minute. The Saints and Fighting Knights scrummed for the ball in front of the Flagler net but it was Schults who emerged from the pile to notch her first score of the season.
Lynn’s offensive push continued minutes later with Tatiana Penagos ripping a shot on target. Merson was able to make the initial save but Martin followed the shot and put back the rebound for the potential game-winning goal.
Flagler, though, caught a lucky break with 4:40 remaining to play as the Blue & White were whistled for a foul inside the box giving the Saints a penalty kick. Adkins buried the PK to send the match into overtime.
In extra time, each squad had their chances. The Saints best opportunity came late in the second OT as Adkins slipped by the LU defense off a through ball but was stymied by a sliding Dolan. Just a minute later, Martin came close to her second goal after she fought off two defenders at the top of the box and pelted a shot to the left post. Merson made a diving punch save and the two teams settled for a draw.
Flagler outshot Lynn 30-20 but tied 6-6 in corner kicks.
