Butler Shines in Women’s Soccer Senior Day Victory
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Not even the effects of Hurricane Sandy could dampen Lynn University’s women’s soccer day as the Fighting Knights claimed a 2-1 victory over Florida Tech on its senior day. After honoring the careers of Kelsey Butler, Rio Hanlan and Stevie Jones in a pregame ceremony, Lynn’s underclassmen played key roles with Tatiana Penagos and Jackie Hellet scoring goals while Butler inched closer to the program’s all-time saves record. Lynn improves to 5-8-2 overall.
Butler finished up the regular season on a high note with eight saves, including seven in the first half. She needs seven more saves to top the all-time mark of 227 held by Maegan Vondal. The Panthers (7-6-3) took advantage 30 mph sustained winds in the opening half, getting the best of Butler in the 24th minute when Carly Hunter scored the first goal of the game.
Florida Tech managed 13 shots and 10 corner kicks in the opening period but was smothered in the second half by a defense led by Hanlan.
The Fighting Knights matched the Panthers with four minutes remaining in the first half when Tatianna Penagos scored her fourth goal of the season. Aly Vargas set up the play beautifully as she tipped a pass to Penagos at the top of the box and the freshman forward ripped a shot to the open upper right corner of the net.
Lynn had the powerful wind to its back in the second half and it showed with FIT held to one shot on goal and no corner kicks. The Blue and White’s defense stepped up big in the second half with help by Hanlan and Paige Meggison as they the Panthers without a shot in the first 22 minutes.
Meghan Dolan was very active offensively, attempting four shots, including hitting the post from 40-yards out off a free kick. The shot that mattered most, though, came from Jackie Hellett in the 65th minute of play. The sophomore forward collected a quick free kick pass from Rachel Lallas via Scout Stowe, and let it fly from 35 yards, sailing her shot over the head of Panthers keeper Paige Redmon for the game-winner.
The Fighting Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, October 30, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Lakeland, Fla., to battle Florida Southern in the opening round of the Sunshine State Conference Championship. The victor will move on to the semifinals hosted by Rollins. Fans can catch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com.
