Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. – Making her first start in over a year, Kelsey Butler stopped 10 shots, including several in the waning moments, to help Lynn University’s women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Nova Southeastern on Saturday evening. Kirstie Schults scored her fifth goal of the season for the Fighting Knights, who improve to 3-5-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Down several key players due to injury, the Blue & White’s Meghan Dolan made her first career start in defense while Butler earned the start in net. Lynn was outshot 26-10 by the Sharks (2-4-1, 1-2-0 SSC) but most of the attempts came from well past 25-yards.
After a couple opportunities for NSU, Schults did what she does best: score. Freshman Riley Andreu used her speed to break free of the midfield in the 23rd minute before sending a through ball past the Sharks’ defense. Making a diagonal run to the right post, Schults beat the keeper outside the 18 and tipped in the shot for her second game-winner of the year.
Nova Southeastern did not go down lightly, though, taking shot after shot with time winding down. Butler took control and turned away the Sharks at every turn. A shot from the right wing was punched away by the Overland Park, Kans., product with 10 on the clock but the senior keeper kept her best for last.
With five minutes remaining in the match Malin Broberg spun around her defender and looked at a one-on-one with Butler. Broberg ripped a hard shot but Butler boxed it to the left post to keep the shutout intact.
The Fighting Knights return to action on Tuesday, October 2, at 6 p.m. when they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., to battle Eckerd College. Fans can listen to the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com. Don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
