St. Louis – Lynn University’s 20th-ranked women’s soccer team fell 4-1 to Rockhurst on Sunday afternoon. Lina Forsman scored the lone goal for the Fighting Knights, who drop to 0-2 on the season.
Defensive miscues plagued the Blue & White for much of the match and contributed to three of the four Hawks goals. Rockhurst (1-0) found the back of the net 12:05 into the contest when LU’s defense attempted to clear a loose ball but found the Hawks’ Jessica Cook inside the six-yard box instead. Cook settled and easily scored on an open net.
Forsman injected new life into the Fighting Knights in the 37th minute of play. The sophomore forward tracked down a perfectly placed lob pass from Lauren Handley and ripped a shot from the top left corner of the box over Rockhurst keeper Lucy Sullivan to knot the game at one.
Unfortunately, four minutes later a cross from Kasey Lierz slipped past the LU defense and Caroline Brandt was able to tap it in for the eventual game-winner.
Lynn did not lie down in the second half, though. The Fighting Knights went on the attack with Kirstie Schults and Jackie Hellett logging four of the team’s five second half shots. Schults’ first attempt nearly tied the game after the sophomore forward beat her defender in a foot race and ripped a one-on-one shot that was saved by Sullivan.
With possession in LU’s favor, a third error in the defense set the squad back. Brandi Van Booven took advantage by stealing the ball away from the central defense and hitting home a shot to the right post to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
The Blue & White still continued to battle but the aggressive attacking left the team vulnerable in the back. In the 89th minute, a through ball went past the back line, forcing Meghan Dolan out of the box but Taylor Skala ran down the pass, avoided Dolan and tapped in a shot to put the game away.
Rockhurst out shot Lynn 17-8 and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Dolan stopped six shots while Sullivan made three saves.
The Fighting Knights return to action on Sunday, September 9, at 7 p.m. when they travel to St. Augustine, Fla., to take on Flagler. For more information log on to LynnFightingKnights.com, ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
