McNeill and Murray Lift Knights Past Colorado Christian
CLEARWATER, Fla.-Lynn University’s softball defeated Colorado Christian in five innings Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Knights were led by Danielle McNeill who had a stellar day both in the field and at the plate. Danielle McNeill went two-for-two, with a three-run double, four RBIs, and a triple play at third base. Kasey Murray earned another win on the mound as well as hitting three-for-three with four RBIs and two runs scored.
A Murray triple in the top of the second would score Anne Marie Van Casteren to give Lynn the 1-0 lead. McNeill’s first hit of the game, a single to left field would send Murray home with LU on top, 2-0. In the bottom of the second, Colorado Christian would score its only run of the game, when Coffing scored on a throw after and error by Lynn’s shortstop.
Heading into the top of the third, with a 2-1 lead, the Knights scored three runs on three hits, while stranding two on base. An RBI single to shortstop for Lydia West followed by a single up the middle from Murray, sent West and Vassallo home for the 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third with bases loaded, McNeill and Murray made the play of the game. Murray caught a line drive right to her for the first out, tossed the ball to McNeill who stepped on third for the second, and then turned and tagged the runner coming from second for the triple play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth Lynn added five more runs on four hits to secure the victory. After a lead off ground out from Christina Carvatta, Savulak singled to the shortstop. Devin Kochergen reached on an error by the CCU pitcher, which advanced Savulak to second and then third. Savulak would score on the throw as Kochergen moved over to second.
A single to right field for Vassallo sent Kochergen to the corner. Van Casteren went down on swings for the second out, setting up designated player West with a runner on third. The freshman slugger drew a walk, followed by Murray hitting a shot to left field, scoring Kochergen. With bases loaded for McNeill and two outs, the junior transfer doubled to deep left center to score all three base runners for the 10-1 win.
Murray picked up the win while allowing only one hit over the course of five innings of work. Savulak was three-for-three alongside Murray. LU stands at 4-3 on the season. The Blue and White take the field for the third and final day of the Eckerd Spring Invitational February 10, with games at 9 am against Georgia State College & University and 11:30am over Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd.
