Softball Sweeps the Sharks
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.-Lynn University’s softball team was led by Devin Kochergen and Bianca Savulak in a two-game sweep of Nova Southeastern. The Fighting Knights took game one, 4-1, and were led by catcher Devin Kochergen who went three-for-four with one RBI and one run scored. In game two, Bianca Savulak batted in two RBIs in three hits on three at-bats en route to the 7-1 victory.
NSU got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Emery doubled to left center which scored Saladrigas. Lynn answered back in the top of the fifth when Jasmine Campos drove in Lydia West for the game-tying run. A single through the left side would score Campos for the go-ahead run. Kaci Vassallo followed suit with a single through the left side, scoring Carvatta. A single to left field from Anne Marie Van Casteren would send home Kochergen for the
4-1 Fighting Knights lead.
Kasey Murray pitched a complete game on the mound for the Blue and White. She allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts over seven innings. Murray advanced to 5-4 on the season while Von Doellen picked up her fourth loss of the season for the Sharks.
Savulak started things up in the top of the first of game two with a one-out single to right field. Kochergen popped up to first base, followed by Vassallo drawing a walk, would set up Van Casteren at the plate with two on and two out. Van Casteren tripled to deep centerfield to clear the bases for a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning LU would pick up its third run when Campos scored on a single by Kochergen. The Fighting Knights picked up one run on three hits while stranding two for the 3-0 lead over NSU.
A double by Danielle McNeill scored Murray in the top of the third. LU would hold the 4-0 lead until the top of the sixth when McNeill and Naginsky both drew walks before Christina Carvatta singled to the pitcher to load the bases for Bianca Savulak. A wild pitch by the Sharks ace scored McNeill and advanced the runners. With a full count Savulak tripled to deep center field to score both Carvatta and Naginsky.
Trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the six the Sharks threatened scoring one run on three hits before stranding two on base. Lynn went on to win 7-1 with Missy Montgomery earning the win. Montgomery pitched a complete seven innings allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
The Blue and White advance to 9-6 on the season, with ever batter tallying a hit over the course of the double header. The Fighting Knights will head home to host Mercyhurst on Sunday, February 24.
