Boca Raton, Fla.-Lynn University’s softball team was blanked by Tampa, 5-0, on Friday in the opening game of the final Sunshine State Conference series of 2013. Tampa’s Kayla Cox threw a perfect game through four and two third innings before Devin Kochergen reached on a seven pitch walk. Cox earned a no-hitter en route to the victory over the Fighting Knights. LU (19-29) was led by Kasey Murray who pitched a complete game while striking out two Spartans and allowed only three earned runs.
Tampa scored its first run in the opening inning when a bases loaded wild pitch would plate Meagan Burke for a 1-0 lead over LU. The Spartans added two more runs in the top of the second to lead 3-0 for majority of the game.
Lynn escaped threats in the next three innings before Tampa was able to break through the Knights defense. The Spartans plated two more runs on two hits and two LU errors to hold a 5-0 lead in the sixth. Anne Marie Van Casteren made a diving catch before she stepped on second for an unassisted double play with bases loaded to end the inning.
Cox struck out 12 Fighting Knights in the win. The two teams face off Saturday, April 27 for the final two games of the series.
