Men's Tennis Tops Embry-Riddle for Perez's 400th Career Win

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University’s men’s tennis team beat defending NAIA Champions Embry-Riddle, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon. The win marked Mike Perez’s 400th as the head of the men’s tennis program. The Fighting Knights improve their record to 9-0 while the Eagles fall to 4-2. The Blue & White stands at 10-4 all-time against Embry-Riddle.
ERAU took a 1-0 lead when their top duo in the NAIA, Deni Zmak and Simon Felix, defeated Vlad Cirla and Daniel Riggs, 8-4. Lynn’s Tomas Porkop and Alessio Iannozzi answered back to even the score, 1-1, with a 9-7 win over Jamie Sanche-Canamar and Patrick Besch at No. 2 doubles. Roman Turtygin and Paolo Volpicelli took Miguel Lopez Gomez and Luke de Caires to a tie-breaker but lost, 9-8 (7-5), giving Embry-Riddle a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Riggs evened the score once again with a 6-3, 6-4, win at No. 2 singles. Porkop continued his hot streak with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win at the third spot over 18th-ranked Felix. The Eagles Zmak, who is the top singles player in the NAIA, answered back with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over No. 17 Cirla in the top singles slot. With the match tied 3-all, Iannozzi, Volpicelli and Turtygin won at the four, five and six spots, respectively.
Perez began coaching the Fighting Knights in 1990 and over the past 25 seasons has won four Sunshine State Conference Titles and a NCAA National Championship in 2007 when he was named the Regional and National Coach of the Year in 2007. He has combined for over 900 victories as head of the men’s and women’s program and won his 500th match with the women’s team last season.
Lynn will have a few days rest before returning to the courts of the Perper Tennis Complex on March 9, for a match against Northwood (Mich.).
