No. 3 Men’s Tennis Triumphs Over No. 6 Rollins
BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University’s men’s tennis team defeated No. 6 Rollins 6-3 on Saturday morning. The Fighting Knights, who are ranked No. 3 by ITA Tennis move to 2-0 on the season. The win comes as the first in Sunshine State Conference play in 2013.
The Tars took an early 2-1 lead after the doubles competition when the No. 4 duo of Vlad Cirla and Willi Wolfer dropped Rollins’ Will Kwok and Robin Marchione, 8-2. Jason Alabaster and Kacobo Herrero took down Max Kouyate and Alessio Iannozzi, 8-4. The newcomer pair of Pavel Mohja and Simon Gloeckner was defeated 8-5 by Adrian Di Felice and Cooper Maxwell.
LU came back in singles play to secure the victory. Wolfer, who ranks fourth nationally in singles, went head-to-head with No. 36 Malte Christensen for a 6-1, 6-1 sweep. Mohja beat Herrero in sets of 6-0, 6-2 for Lynn to take the 3-2 lead. A 6-3, 6-0 finish for Gloeckner over Alabaster and a 6-1, 6-2 win for Kouyate over Di Felice would secure the win. No. 17 Cirla would win in sets of 7-5 and 6-3 against Kwok.
No. 28 Iannozzi won his first set against Marchione 6-2 but dropped the second 6-1. Marchione defeated Iannozzi 6-1 in the deciding set to wrap up the match with the Fighting Knights on top, 6-3.
