Wolfer Earns Howling Victoy at ITA South Region
Lakeland, Fla. – Lynn University’s Willi Wolfer won the USTA/ITA South Regional Tournament with a 3-6, 6-3 1-0 victory over Bruno Savi on Sunday morning. Savi was trailing in the third set before retiring to injury. Wolfer becomes the first Fighting Knight to win the South Regional title since Julian Carsuzaa in 2007.
After dropping the opening set 3-6, Wolfer regained his form and dominated the West Florida player 6-3 to even the match up. The senior out of Troisdorf, Germany, then won a grueling first game in the third set before Savi had to retire.
Wolfer will now compete at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, held October 11-14 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
