UPDATE: Wolfer in Command at ITA South Regional
Lakeland, Fla. – Lynn University’s Willi Wolfer has advanced to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA South Regional Tournament in both singles and doubles play along with partner Vlad Cirla. Alessio Iannozzi reached the quarterfinals after knocking off another seeded player but had to retire in the second set.
Having already beaten a No. 2 seed to reach the round of 16, Iannozzi made quick work of ninth-seeded Victor Lozier of Saint Leo 6-3, 6-1 to move on to the quarterfinals. The sophomore southpaw trailed Konstantine Kutschenko of Valdosta State 6-4, 4-1 before retiring.
Wolfer looked as though his singles play would be done after falling 4-6 in the opening set but after a few adjustments the Troisdorf, Germany, native came back strong to win 6-1, 6-1 against Florida Southern’s Emanuel Luber. The fourth seeded Wolfer came back later in the afternoon to top No. 5 seed Fabian Groetsch of Barry 6-3, 6-3. He will face Kutschenko in the semifinals.
Lynn’s doubles tandem did not even have to break a sweat after becoming the first team to win 8-0 in the tournament. Cirla and Wolfer brushed aside Adrian di Felice and Malte Christesen and will now square-off against familiar faces Groetsch and Marco Mokrzycki of the Buccaneers.
Pavel Mohja was eliminated from the main draw after falling 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) to West Florida’s Bruno Savi.
