Lakeland, Fla. – Disappointment in the morning turned into excitement in the afternoon for Lynn University men’s tennis player Willi Wolfer at the USTA/ITA South Regional Tournament. Wolfer lost with partner Vlad Cirla in the semifinals of doubles but will play for the singles championship on Sunday.
The doubles tandem went up against familiar foes, Fabian Groetsch and Marco Mokrzycki of Barry, and the rivals did not disappoint in the action. Back and forth the match went but it was Barry’s squad who took the 9-8 victory.
Wolfer had much more luck in singles competition. Facing Konstantine Kutschenko of Valdosta State, the senior out of Troisdorf, Germany, earned some breathing room with a 6-4 victory in the first set. With a spot in the finals on the line, Wolfer would need a little extra time to eliminate Kutschenko before winning 7-6.
This marks the second straight year Wolfer has advanced to the ITA South Regional finals.
