Confalonieri Wins ITA South Regional, Pairs with Ivan for Runner-Up Finish in Doubles
Pensacola, Fla.- Lynn University’s women’s tennis star Valentine Confalonieri captured the 2013 ITA South Regional Championship crown on Monday afternoon with a three-set win over Barry’s Emma Onila, (5-7, 7-6, 6-2). Confalonieri then teamed with senior Ioana Ivan in the doubles finals where the defending champions were upset by BU’s Onila and Linda Fritschken, 8-2.
Confalonieri dropped the opening set to Onila, 5-7, before coming from behind to take the next set 7-6 to force a third set. The sophomore from Sanremo, Italy, cruised to victory with a 6-2 win in the deciding set.
A year after winning the 2012 Doubles title when they beat teammates Andrea Berkova and Kim Przeszlowski, Confalonieri and Ivan found themselves back in the finals. This time the No. 1 ranked duo was trumped by BU’s pair, who ranked second entering the match.
In the consolation finals, Alina Jane was misplaced by Elissa DeCampli of Rollins on Monday morning. Jane lost the first frame 6-3 before falling 6-2 to finish as runner up after beating DeCampli’s teammate Taylor Brown in the semifinals on Sunday.
