Injuries End No. 8 Women's Tennis SSC Run
Boca Raton, Fla.- Lynn University’s women’s tennis team
was defeated, 5-3, by Saint Leo in the Sunshine State Conference
Semifinals on Friday afternoon. The Fighting Knights will play Rollins
on Saturday, April 20, at 10:30am in the back draw bracket to decide the
third place and fourth place team.
Saint Leo took a 2-1 lead after doubles play when Emily Singleton and Laura Kemkes defeated LU’s Kim Przeszlowski and Aleks Vukadinovic, 8-0. Coralie Pesenti and Adrianna Daszkiewicz took on Alina Jane and Andrea Berkova in a tough 8-5 set. Third ranked Valentine Confalonieri and Ioana Ivan scored the only doubles point for Lynn defeating Maria Benkirane and Pauline Helgesson, 8-1.
No. 3 Confalonieri tied up the match with her 6-1, 6-1, win over No. 37 Pesenti. Tied 2-all, Daszkiewicz scored the third point for the Lions when Przeszlowski retired to injury after the first set. No. 13 Ivan’s 6-1, 6-4, victory over Helgesson evened the score once again at 3-all. Benkirane put the Lions up 4-3 when she defeated Jane, 6-4, 6-2.
With both Berkova and Vukandinovic a third set, the adrenaline was high as the Lions were putting up a fight with LU. Berkova wouldn’t back down, in just her second match since returning from injury, Singleton defeated Berkova, 4-6, 6-2, and 6-0.
The 15-4 Fighting Knights take on the Tars in the third place match on Saturday at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton, Fla. Saint Leo advances to the SSC finals against No. 2 Barry.
