No. 6 Women's Tennis Attacks the Sharks

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University’s sixth-ranked women’s tennis team defeated No. 4 Hawaii Pacific (12-3) on Sunday morning. The Fighting Knights improve to 20-1 overall while No. 5 Valentine Confalonieri and Ioana Ivan remain undefeated in doubles with a 20-0 record. 

Lynn’s top duo got the Blue & White on the board first with an 8-4 win over Karen Ramirez and Celina Goetti for a 1-0 lead. Madgalena Smejova and Lorena Gheorghe then won, 8-4, over Kim Przeszlowski and Aleks Vukadinovic at the No. 2 spot before Alina Jane and Andrea Berkova fell, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles to Vivian Hansen and Lea Kruse-Utermann. 

Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, the Fighting Knights had some ground to make up. No. 11 Ivan won at No. 2 singles 6-1 in both sets over No. 34 Celina Goetti to knot the match at 2-all. No. 1 Confalonieri lost her opening set, 4-6, to Karen Ramirez but she battled back to take sets two and three, 6-0 and 6-3. Confalonieri’s win improved her record to 20-0 this season at the top spot of Lynn’s lineup and gave the Bue & White a 3-2 lead in the match. 

Jane lost, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot to Gheorghe which tied the match 3-3. Przeszlowski won 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot to put give Lynn a slight 4-3 lead with the remaining two singles matches heading into third sets. Vukadinovic won her opening set at No. 5 singles 6-3, but then fell 6-2 to sent the match to a third set to Vivian Hansen. Vukadinovic lost the rubber set 6-2 to even the match 4-4. No. 21 Berkova had a big 7-6 win in the first set but lost set two 6-2 to Smejova. Berkova then won the final frame 6-2 to secure Lynn’s 5-4 victory over the Sharks.

The Fighitng Knights will get some rest before returning to action on the road at Nova Southeastern on Thursday, April 3. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. versus the Sharks.
