No. 12 Rollins Defeats Wounded No. 8 Women's Tennis
Boca Raton, Fla.- Lynn University’s women’s tennis team was upset by No. 12 Rollins on Saturday afternoon in the back draw match of the Sunshine State Conference tournament, 5-2. In a match that decided the third and fourth place team of the SSC tournament, the Blue and White struggled to overcome injuries that had burdened the team all season.
Lynn trailed 2-1 after doubles play with No. 3 Valentine Confalonieri and Ioana Ivan scoring LU’s only point with a 8-1 victory over Rollins’ Elissa DeCampli and Ashley Rosenberg. Valentina Chacin and Aleks Vukadinovic were dealt an 8-1 loss by Mariana Salvador and Carli Davis as the third doubles team. A close 8-5 decision in the favor of the Tars’ Lisa Loft and Ashley Loft gave the Blue and Gold the edge they would need over LU.
Rollins advanced to 3-1 when LU lost by default the number six spot due to the lack of healthy players. Chacin dropped at number five singles in two sets of 6-0, 6-0, to Callie Whitlock putting Rollins one point away from victory. No. 4 Confalonieri swept DeCampli in two sets of 6-0 to cut the Tars lead to 4-2 but Salvador’s 6-2, 6-2 win over LU’s Vukadinovic ended the game with a 5-2 final.
The Blue and White take fourth place in the SSC tournament with a 15-5 record and will make the NCAA Tournament for the 17th consecutive season.
