2013 Volleyball Schedule Announced
BOCA RATON, FLA.- Lynn University volleyball head coach Lynze Roos announced her 2013 schedule on Monday afternoon with a total of 34 games. The Fighting Knights will host the annual Courtyard Boca Raton Invitational as well as head on two road trips as far as New Hampshire and Georgia. LU will host nine Sunshine State Conference matches and will begin its season at the 5th Annual Sharks Volleyball Classic hosted by Nova Southeastern, on September 6 at 9am.
“Opening with the Shark Classic will be great for this young team,” said coach Roos. “We will face some quality opponents and get a feel for our style.”
Lynn hosts the Courtyard Boca Raton Invitational September 13-14, and welcomes several teams from across the country. The Blue and White will face Fort Valley State, Seton Hill and Daeman College for the first time in program history during the tournament. Puerto Rico-Mayaguez is also slated to play Lynn for the third time since first meeting in 2005.
One of the major road trips the Fighting Knights will take this season is to Manchester, N.H., where they will play teams from the northeast region. The trip begins September 20, when LU plays Dowling College, and is rounded out with games against Southern New Hampshire, Bentley and St. Anslem College.
“Our New Hampshire trip will pit us against teams we’ve never seen before which is both challenging and exciting,” exclaimed Roos.
Although conference play begins at home September 27, against Florida Southern, the majority of SSC road games take place in the first half of the league season. Seven of the last 10 matches of the regular season will be at home beginning October 25-26, against Saint Leo and non-conference competition Palm Beach Atlantic.
“The SSC schedule is never easy. We will need to take one match at a time and prepare thoroughly.” Coach Roos added, “Again, we are a young team, many of our players will need to learn our style.”
The Blue and White travels to Carrollton, Ga., amidst the conference season to play four regional games against Alabama-Huntsville, Shorter, West Alabama and Albany State.
“The crossover tournament in West Georgia will prove pivotal in our season,” Roos explained. “With half the SSC docket under our belt, we will need to be ready to play some top contenders from the Gulf South. Four matches in two days in the middle of the season will bring new challenges, so we will have to be mentally and physically ready.”
Lynn hits the road for the final time on November 16, at Saint Leo and closes out the regular season with a match-up against the 2012 national runners-up Tampa on November 23.
Coach Roos added “I’m excited we will be at home for several matches in November, hopefully positioning ourselves for a postseason run.”
Lynn finished the 2012 season 15-13 overall and 5-11 in the SSC. With seven returners from last year’s squad and the addition of six new faces announced last week, the 2013 season looks to be promising for the young team.
