Volleyball Stumbles at Eckerd
St. Petersburg, Fla. – Lynn University’s push for volleyball postseason hit a snag following a 3-0 (19-25, 17-25, 16-25) loss to Eckerd College on Friday night. Niki Haben led with a team-high 15 digs while Michelle Jordan and Shannon Dugan also reached double-digits in digs. Brianna Cox posted a team-best 10 kills and fellow senior Abbey Brokop added 23 assists. Lynn drops to 14-10 overall and 4-8 in the Sunshine State Conference
The Tritons (20-7, 11-2 SSC) started the day by scoring the opening four points in their set one victory. Trailing by double-figures early, Lynn used a block from Brokop and Cox to go on a six-point run and close the gap to 12-16. Lynn closed the gap to as little as three but Eckerd scored the final three points to win the set. Elyse Fleck recorded four kills while Haben had eight digs.
Set two saw a different pace as the Fighting Knights exchanged points with Eckerd to start off. The Tritons, though, began to pull away with a 4-0 run that grew their advantage to 12-6. Lynn came back in the contest bringing the score to 13-11 but three straight points from Eckerd put the set out of reach. Cox lead the offense with four kills and Brokop produced 11 assists.
Eckerd controlled the final set with a 6-1 run to start play. Similar to the beginning of the match, the Blue & White found themselves trailing big before going on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 10-16. Haben lead the team with five digs while Cox had three kills.
Lynn travels to Tampa on November 10, for a SSC clash with the University of Tampa at 3 pm. Fans can catch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com. Don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
